The FEC has determined that the NE 36 Street railroad grade crossing (MP 337+1500', FDOT Crossing No. 272541C) and the NE 34 Court railroad grade crossing (MP 337+2160' FDOT Crossing No. 272542J) has deteriorated to the point that rehabilitation is necessary to maintain the safe operation of both rail and vehicular traffic.
Pursuant to the Crossing Maintenance Agreement executed on February 27, 2004, the City is responsible for the cost of maintaining the roadway crossing surface. FEC has provided an estimated construction cost of $263,208.42 for both crossings.
Should the existing traffic signal loop detection sensors be damaged during construction, the City will be responsible for the cost of replacing them. FEC requires that any replacement loop detectors be installed behind the railroad crossing gate arms to better protect them during future maintenance activities. A ten percent (10%) contingency of $26,321 is requested for unforeseen items such as damage to the traffic signal loop detection sensors.
These amounts indicated in the foregoing and summarized in the following table are estimates only. The City will be invoiced for the actual cost incurred upon completion of the work. FEC provided the estimated cost breakdown by location as follows:
The work will be performed by FEC and its contractor, Gonzalez and Sons, and includes all labor, materials, maintenance of traffic, crossing rehabilitation, and pavement restoration associated with the project. Construction is scheduled to begin on September 13, 2026, and the contractor will coordinate with City staff regarding traffic control and scheduling to minimize disruptions to the traveling public.
Because the City is contractually responsible for the maintenance costs associated with these crossings, approval of the funding will allow both projects to proceed as scheduled and ensure the crossings remain in safe operating condition.
