Board of Adjustment Appointments - Five (5) members and One (1) Alternate Member
1.BACKGROUND/HISTORY
    
 

Issue Statement:   The terms of appointment for the five regular members and the alternate member of the Board of Adjustment expired April 2021. There are currently two vacancies and two (2) additional applications on file at this time. The remaining board members have been contacted and are interested in re-appointment to serve an additional two year term.


Recommended Action:  For each Commissioner to appoint one (1) member to the Board and by consensus, select an alternate member.  All members to serve a two (2) year term.    

 

Background: The Board of Adjustment was established in the Charter under Article XVII, Section 5, for the purpose of receiving applications and hearing appeals in cases involving zoning regulations and subject to appropriate conditions and safeguards; to make recommendations to the city commission on special exception and variance applications to the terms of zoning ordinances of the city as will not be contrary to the public interests, where owing to special conditions, a literal and exact enforcement of the provisions of zoning regulations will result in unnecessary hardship in the use of the property involved. The city commission shall make the final determination on applications for special exceptions and variances and the sole determination on appeals concerning interpretations or the application of land development regulations. 


The five members and one alternate of the Board are appointed by the City Commission pursuant to Article XVI, Section 24-232 of the Oakland Park Code of Ordinances and service for a period of two years.

 

Code Section 24-232. Board of Adjustment states: 

“Each member of the city commission shall nominate one (1) member of the board of adjustment. An alternate member shall be appointed by majority vote of the city commission. All appointments shall be subject to approval of the city commission by resolution. Vacancies in the board of adjustment shall be filled in the same manner.”


2.CURRENT ACTIVITY
    
 

The terms for six (6) members of the 2019-2021 Board of Adjustment expired April 2021. All Board members have been contacted and the chart below indicates those willing to serve another two-year term. Their applications are submitted for your consideration. This Board meets, as needed, the last Tuesday of the month.
