Issue Statement:  The terms of board members Sal Gatanio and Ernest Olivas expire at the end of October 2021.  Mr. Olivas would like to continue to serve another two-year term; however, Mr. Gatanio declined re-appointment consideration due to an increased work schedule.

Recommended Action:  The City Commission, by consensus, appoint two (2) members to serve a two-year term on the Police and Fire Pension Board. There is one additional application attached for consideration. 

Sec. 9-66 Board of trustees.  The administration and responsibility for the proper operation of the retirement system and for making effective the provisions of this article are hereby vested in a board of trustees consisting of five (5) members as follows:

(1) Two (2) public members (excluding employees) to be appointed by the city commission, none of whom may be a city commission member, as hereinafter provided;
(2) Two (2) members who shall be elected from the police department and the fire department, who shall be members of the system. Broward County firefighters who are members of the system shall be treated as members of the fire department for the purposes of voter eligibility and eligibility to serve as a trustee.
(3) The fifth member to be selected by the above four (4) members and approved by a majority vote of all four (4) other board members.

The City-appointed trustees shall serve at the pleasure of the City Commission and shall be subject to reappointment every two (2) years. All members have two-year terms. A trustee shall hold office until a successor is appointed or elected. 

This board meets quarterly on the fourth Thursday of the first month of each quarter at 6:00 p.m. with additional special meetings as required.

Staff recommends two (2) members be appointed, by consensus, to the Police and Fire Pension Board and adopt the resolution.
