Issue Statement: School Advisory Board members serve for a one-year term ending annually in August. Board Member Jack Donnelly's annual term has expired. Mr. Donnelly was appointed last year by Commissioner Bolin and would like to serve another term. His application is attached.
Recommended Action: Commissioner Bolin to appoint one member to the School Advisory Board for a term ending August 2023.
Sec. 2-71. School advisory board.
(a) The City Commission of the City of Oakland Park hereby creates a school advisory board consisting of eight (8) members. The purpose and duties of the school advisory board are to advise the city commission on all issues relating to educational matters which will impact the quality of education for city residents, or which will impact education facilities located within the city. Furthermore, the board shall endeavor to insure that all community interests are identified as key intended goals and therefore, actively engaged in the formulation of a community partnership so as to insure heightened participation by all individuals that make up the Oakland Park community.
(b) The school advisory board will be made up of eight (8) members consisting of citizens and residents of Oakland Park. Each member of the city commission shall be afforded the opportunity to appoint one (1) member to the board and by consensus appoint one (1) alternate board member. The city manager shall be afforded the opportunity to appoint one (1) member and the board shall, as a whole, appoint an at large member who shall be a student attending either a high school or middle school located in the city. No member shall be an employee of the Broward County School Board. All appointments shall be subject to ratification by the city commission. Each member shall serve for a term of one (1) year and the city commission shall appoint new members at the first city commission meeting held in the month of August for each year. Attendance policy for members of this board is governed by section 2-72 of this Code of Ordinances.
(c) The board shall meet no less than every other month and shall make its recommendations to the city commission to assist the commission in gaining an understanding of the goals and objectives adopted by the Broward County School Board from time to time which would affect the operation and management of the five (5) public schools located within the city.
